Deftones are an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988! Known for blending heavy guitar riffs with atmospheric textures, emotional songwriting, and a bunch of experimental influences, the band became one of the most distinctive and influential acts to emerge from the 1990s metal scene. =)
The group's classic lineup consisted of vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, bassist Chi Cheng, and keyboardist/turntablist Frank Delgado. Their music draws from alternative metal, shoegaze-ish, post-hardcore, dream pop, and experimental rock, creating a sound that balances aggression with melody and ambience.
After years of building a local following, Deftones gained national attention with their debut album, Adrenaline (1995). They achieved wider success with Around the Fur (1997), which featured standout tracks such as My Own Summer (Shove It) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away). Their breakthrough came with White Pony (2000), an acclaimed release that expanded the band's sonic palette and earned a Grammy Award for the song Elite! Woohoo.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Deftones continued to evolve with albums including : Deftones, Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes, Koi No Yokan, Gore, and Ohms. Their willingness to experiment while maintaining a recognizable identity has earned them a devoted global fanbase and critical respect.
A major turning point in the band's history came in 2008 when bassist Chi Cheng suffered severe injuries in a car accident. After years of health complications, he passed away in 2014. During this period and afterward, bassist Sergio Vega performed with the band for many years before departing in 2022.
Often associated with the nu-metal era but difficult to categorize, Deftones have consistently transcended genre boundaries. Their combination of crushing heaviness, cinematic atmosphere, and emotional depth has influenced generations of artists across metal, rock, and alternative music.
